Students from the University of Waterloo and four other Ontario institutions can vie for cash prizes and the chance to establish a startup by licensing a novel technology.

The Proteus Innovation Competition is a four-month competition that challenges students to craft compelling commercialization strategies for one out of five promising technologies with the chance to win a slice of more than $25,000 in cash prizes and the opportunity to license the technology and form their own startup.

Canada is facing a health care crisis due to escalating costs, a shortage of health-care professionals and increasing needs from an aging population. The effects of this crisis are felt more profoundly in remote, rural and Indigenous communities, where the shortage of health-care workers is greater. Today, the European Space Agency's (ESA) Euclid space mission reveals five of its first full-color images of the cosmos. For the first time, Euclid has harnessed the power to capture razor-sharp astronomical images across a vast expanse of the sky, delving deep into the distant universe. These images showcase Euclid's potential, demonstrating the quality of Euclid’s data and its readiness to develop the most extensive 3D map of the universe to date — unveiling some of its long-held secrets.

Every year, around 10 million people contract tuberculosis (TB) — a treatable disease where bacteria attack a patient’s lungs. Globally, only about half of those who contract TB yearly are diagnosed. Many other people with TB are undiagnosed and untreated, partly due to a lack of access to quality health-care systems, particularly in resource-limited settings and among marginalized groups.  

Researchers at the Cybersecurity and Privacy Institute (CPI) at the University of Waterloo have received funding from the National Cybersecurity Consortium (NCC) under the Cyber Security Innovation Network (CSIN) program. This funding marks a significant milestone for CPI,  Waterloo and the NCC — reinforcing a commitment to advance Canada's cybersecurity ecosystem.

Twenty eligible projects were awarded a combined total of $11.2 million across three categories: commercialization, research and development and training.

Women’s Executive Network (WXN) recently released the 2023 Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100 Award Winners, and Waterloo professors and alumni appear on the list celebrating women across Canada for their leadership and accomplishments.

An interdisciplinary, multi-institutional team with a University of Waterloo professor as a core member, has been named the winner of the prestigious Brockhouse Canada Prize for Interdisciplinary Research in Science and Engineering on November 1st.
