Adjusting to life in Canada

At the beginning of last summer, master’s student Lena Kozyr fled her home in Ukraine, leaving behind parents, grandparents, relatives and friends to seek refuge in Vancouver, Canada.

Like so many other Ukrainians, Kozyr says the move was bittersweet. Though she was grateful for a sense of safety and was looking forward to new opportunities, a mix of loneliness and anxiety still riddled her.

Recomposing music and identity

As a multi-disciplinary artist, Charlie Star expresses her Afro-Caribbean heritage through innovative media and reshaping existing materials. Centering her graduate work on the influence of music on socio-political injustices, Star uses astrology as a tool for analysis and her personal heritage as the framework. "I look for instances where music has been expressed as - and instigated - social movements. Highlighting expressions from the past can give perspective on our present circumstances."

Pharmacy alum recognized for volunteer work in Indigenous communities

Growing up on a reserve, Amanda Michano’s (PharmD ’22) dream of working in health care was sparked by a visit from a pharmacist.

“I was in awe of the pharmacist who came to help me understand how to use my inhaler for my asthma,” Michano says. “It was in that moment that I knew I wanted to help teach people how to use their medication.”

Swimming in the pool of entrepreneurship

Anna Liebenberg ( BASc ’22) and Shreshth Mehra ( BASc ’22) bonded over a mutual love of fitness.

Both, however, experienced moments of isolation in their athletic pursuits. For Mehra, it was when he was training for Iron Man, a long-distance triathlon event. For Liebenberg, it was when she was lifting weights at the gym without help from a personal trainer.

Graduate explores interdisciplinary approaches to restorative justice

Mackenzie Leclaire's academic journey exemplifies the value of interdisciplinary learning and qualitative research. A new graduate of the MA Sociology program at the University of Waterloo, Mackenzie's research intersects sociology, legal studies, and psychology in exploring the impact of a restorative justice peer support group for people who have offended sexually.
