Racism in Canada: past and present

africville
This commemorative piece describes life-changing, systematic racism experienced by people of colour living in Halifax in the mid- to late 20th century. In Halifax, Nova Scotia, where I grew up, my childhood friends and I knew only a small part of the story of Africville. The last house was removed less than a decade before I was born, and already its memory had faded. But racism still exists there and in all parts of Canada today, including the Region of Waterloo. This is a good time to listen, reflect and collaborate to make things better here in Canada for those who are black, indigenous and others who identify as people of colour.
