Welcome to the research page of the Quantum Materials Spectroscopy Group at the University of Waterloo

The Quantum Materials Spectroscopy, led by Prof. David Hawthorn, studies Quantum Materials using resonant soft x-ray scattering and x-ray absorption spectroscopy at synchrotrons such as the Canadian Light Source. By clarifying the nature of exotic spin, charge and orbital ordering phenomena that can occur in Quantum Materials, we hope to shed light on some of the long-standing mysteries in the rich physics of cuprate high temperature superconductors.

We have also been developing an inverse photoemission spectrometer to study the unoccupied electronic states of the cuprates and other quantum materials. This technique is anticipated to provide valuable insight into the band structure of these materials.

Our Group has also been involved in a collaborative effort to advance a new form of x-ray absorption spectroscopy known as inverse partial fluorescence yield. This experimental probe provides researchers in a wide range of disciplines an alternative means to study the x-ray absorption cross-section of materials that is unaffected by common sources of spectral distortion.
