Bachtiar is a professor in the Faculty of Geography at the Universitas Gadjah Mada. (UGM). His research specializes in earth sciences, disaster mitigation, geomorphology, physical geography, and environmental geoscience. Bachtiar’s core research areas include coastal geomorphology, oceanography, paleotsunami, and sedimentology.
Bachtiar is a member of UGM's Coastal Geomorphology research cluster.
