Developing and enhancing graduate student supports

Addresses objective:
T2D Strengthen graduate student support

Started indicator

Working from the provost’s 2019 student experience review, Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Affairs (GSPA) has been working with campus partners to: increase transparency on graduate student funding, advocate for clearer communications regarding student wellness, develop more robust orientation and onboarding, and make the processes by which graduate student concerns are addressed more transparent (e.g., petitions, time extensions, supervisory changes).

Moving forward: Waterloo's Task Force on Graduate Student Supervision will report their findings in 2022-2023 and combined with results the 2022 Canadian Graduate and Professional Student Survey results, will inform the University’s strategic directions on improved graduate student experience. In particular, these reports will inform Waterloo’s Approved Doctoral Dissertation Supervisory Training series, jointly offered by Centre for Teaching Excellence and GSPA. More broadly speaking, a revised Policy 30, the policy that governs relationships between teaching assistants (TAs) and the University at all levels, will be implemented. This revised policy is expected to provide greater clarity and support to instructors, students, and TAs.
