Info session: Waterloo’s pension and the exploration of UPP

Tuesday, June 9, 2026

Your pension is among the most significant parts of your working relationship with the University of Waterloo. Last fall, the University announced that we would begin exploring the possibility of converting the registered pension plan (RPP) to the University Pension Plan (UPP), a jointly sponsored pension plan for Ontario's university sector.

That exploration is now underway — and your engagement in it matters.

You are invited to participate in an information session to learn more about this exploration on June 22, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. in person (Humanities Theatre) or virtually.

This session will include:

  • Pension fundamentals, including the current University RPP
  • Why the University is exploring a conversion to UPP
  • An introduction to UPP and how it compares to Waterloo’s RPP
  • What a potential conversion process would involve

No decision has been made. Keeping you informed — and giving you room to ask questions and share your perspective — is central to how we are approaching this work.

This event is open to University employees and retirees. A recording of the information session and related resources will be posted on the UPP exploration website after the event.

Questions can be submitted in advance and will be addressed during the information session and posted on the University’s UPP FAQ website.

The University will also be continuing to collaborate with a communications working group that includes members of UWRA, UWSA, FAUW, CUPE and OPSEU to ensure that you have information that meets your needs. In the coming months, additional sessions with member-specific details and scenarios will be offered based on feedback and questions received.

We recognize that pensions are an important and personal topic. Your participation and feedback throughout the exploration phase are strongly encouraged. Visit the University’s UPP exploration website for the latest information, updates and FAQs.
