University of Waterloo 2023 Summer School
A Sustainable Futures Initiative
The 2023 Summer School will showcase leading-edge research from a wide array of University of Waterloo professors at the interface of water, climate, and energy. Hosted by the Water Institute, the Waterloo Climate Institute and the Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Energy, this summer school is aimed at senior undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, practitioners and interested stakeholders.
This uniquely designed, three-week virtual program offers participants insights and strategies from multiple disciplines to address the urgent challenges related to water and energy security in the context of climate change. As a participant, you will:
Learn from experts on leading-edge research in the water, energy and climate change domain
Develop a solid understanding of the current and predicted problems and solutions for water and energy security in a changing climate

Roy Brouwer
Roy Brouwer is Executive Director of the Water Institute, Professor of Economics, and University Research Chair in Water Resources Economics at the University of Waterloo. He is visiting Professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology (Eawag) in Zürich, member of the External Advisory Board of the Vienna Technical University Doctoral Program on Water Resource Systems and Editor-in-Chief of the journal Water Resources and Economics. Before joining the University of Waterloo in 2016, he was head of the department of Environmental Economics at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam.
Sarah Burch
Professor Burch is uncovering the pathways cities follow as they shift towards more resilient, low-carbon futures. She is the head of the Sustainability Policy Research on Urban Transformation (SPROUT) lab, director of the international partnership-based research project TRANSFORM, and a Lead Author with the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
