Regrets from Pat Lafranier

Christine Liebig has left Centre for Extended Learning (CEL) and moved to the Stratford campus. Dave Bean will appoint another member from CEL soon.

Thanks to Mary Lynn for the tips on new web designs in academia and for the interesting article on the role of the web in building environment. Also thanks to Marlon for posts on HML5 and accessibility.

Pat sent a message that Paul McKone has developed a phased header skin for twiki's. Shawn Winnington-Ball will install this when he returns from vacation.

Post-secondary Education Web (PSEWeb) Conference will be held in Toronto on May 8-20. Some WAC members are attending. If anyone is attending the session on web governance, please contact Terry.

David Bean has sent a note that CEL has purchased a copy of "College Students on the Web: Usability Guidelines for Creating Compelling Websites for College".

2. Approval of February 16, 2011 Minutes - approved as distributed

3. "Semantic Web Standards and Applications" - Dr. Helen Chen

Helen gave a presentation which defined semantic web standards and explained the complex and evolving web layers or "web genomes".

Schema can be used for university data - a lot of graduates are currently working on this issue. These types of schema will not appear in search results if Waterloo is not "on board" with other universities.

Literature can be found through the Stanford sample Protégé.

Helen will send some links to share with the committee.

4. CMS Project Update

Demonstration (Eva Grabinski, Lauren Harrison, Liam Morland and Chris Carignan)

As mention in the March report to WAC, Drupal 7 has been chosen for the project. The CMS team gave a demonstration of the first iteration of work on the Waterloo main.

Accessibility standards. Government regulations changed recently. The CMS team is striving to meet Level AA standards and where not feasible will meet Level A standards.

5. Web redesign (Sarah Forgrave)

Phasing protocols will be adopted by end of March and the changes to the brand architecture after the launch-still some tweaking for the word marks. The team is conducting a survey on thoughts of the site so far.

The URL shortener was approved from Communications & Public Affairs (CPA)/ER to uwat.ca - this is not a replacement for uwaterloo.ca. Details will be presented at future meeting.

At a future meeting, the team will also discuss the pattern for URLs in Drupal.

6. Web Strategy Governance and Policy Committee update (Terry Stewart)

Committee was not able to meet in past month and is looking to replace the Chair. If you are interested, please contact Terry.

7. Other business

Social media icons (Kevin Paxman and Kelly Teahen)

Kevin and Kelly demonstrated newer icons with a proposed "Waterloo Shell". These received positive feedback from the Committee.
