Likes and dislikes about web maintenance software

  • Dreamweaver is very user friendly.
  • Contribute is good for our content providers. Training is simplified and people with little or no html experience can provide content. We can't send reminders about stale content, which would be nice. Difficult question to answer in this form as there are trade-offs with anything.
  • Some initial frustrations getting up and running. Once up and running, things move smoothly.
  • Contribute works well for editors but Dreamweaver is frustrating to work with from a developer point of view.
  • Dreamweaver: love Templates and price is good (for me but not for prof's and labs) also like file check in & out for multiple authors, so-so on site wide features (like lack of re-posting files after site-wide search and replace), too cumbersome for occasional use authors. Contribute: Don't like restricted access to Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) or lack of code view; need something in between Contribute and Dreamweaver for our purposes; we end up with clunky and messy HTML code.
  • easy to use
  • used to it.
  • Not much support for databases.
  • Easy to use and understand. Easy to teach backups to use this software.
  • Contribute is easy to use but sometimes only Dreamweaver will do the job. Dreamweaver can be more complicated.
  • Too many of us update the site and some lock others out and then forget to unlock.
  • allows for both What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG) and hard code views
  • Dreamweaver/Contribute are very convenient but not widely understood by staff. Text editor is ok for highly trained faculty and technical staff.
  • We have many maintainers who are used to using something familiar.
  • I use dreamweaver primarily as a document repository to maintain and test before sending changes live.
  • frontpage integrates with IIS6.0 well and ftp service does not need to run on the server which is required for dreamweaver. I like dreamweaver better but try training it to transient students that maintain websites for faculty. Dreamweaver is the best tool for pros but not for joes.
  • Contribute is sometimes problematic if you don't set things up exactly right. (Issues with web address aliases, samba drives, etc.). DreamWeaver doesn't have these problems.
  • Dreamweaver in trying to be helpful doesn't allow the flexibility to modify all code. The html editor has features specific to a code editor that makes coding very easy.
  • Very inefficient to manage medium sized site.
  • Coontribute is effective for quick changes in information - Dreamweaver more complicated with using for new pages, templates, etc, and since we do not have a designated person for templates, etc then mistakes or overwrites occur occassionally.
  • Only old versions of PHP and vim/vi are available.
  • It's more complex than what we need for 90% of our textual edits. We are intending on moving to Contribute, but haven't done so yet.
  • easy to use
  • WYSIWYG, easy publishing
  • It's fairly quick and easy to use for my purposes.
  • Easy to learn and use.
  • I personally like the flexibility as to the various software packages I can use.
  • Rarely do we want to do something that the software can't do.
  • like designer view
  • Simple enough - I just don't work on it frequently enough to feel comfortable with day to day activities.
  • Contribute is as easy as using Word.
  • I think from a developer standpoint, Dreamweaver is great. I have many issues with people forgetting how to use Contribute because they do not use it enough. The other side to that, is that often times users of Contribute are not comfortable with the technology. I think a Content Management System (CMS) would be much better since it would be as simple as filling out forms.
  • We find the dreamweaver templates too complex.
  • Dreamweaver is too complex for most people and not necessary. Both Contribute and Dreamweaver are not very WYSIWYG
  • It's simple to use for those departmental sites that have maintainers with little experience. But too simplistic for advanced applications and page design.
  • I find it a bit finicky as it doesn't always want to cooperate when it crashes, gives me error messages and claims to send drafts when none can be found or received.
  • easy to make changes, Information Systems & Technology support
  • Ease of use, clean interface
