Date: December 7, 2007, Time: 2pm-3pm, Location: MC 2009

Attendees: Guillermo Fuentes, Glenn Anderson, Megan McDermott, Kevin Paxman, Heather Wey, Alan Kirker, Pat Lafranier, Isaac Morland, Andrew Smith, Jason Greatrex, Matt Regehr

Agenda:

  • continue discussion from previous meeting

Discussion

  • Eva Grabinski joined the group but was unable to attend today’s meeting.
  • There was discussion about when pages may not need left navigation, e.g., surveys, pdfs. However, no decision was made and the issue will need further discussion.
  • Sub navigation should appear under appropriate section headings and submenus for other sections should not appear at the same time.
  • Pages should not have a third level of menus (the left and right menus are considered the first and second levels).
  • Renaming elements of the template to make them more meaningful would be a long-term issue for future iterations of the template.
  • The Building a Talent Trust campaign will be changing in the new year. Units that store the image locally will need to make sure that they need to use the new image when it’s available.
  • There was discussion regarding what constituted the address and whether building names should be included to identify where the unit is located. A telephone extension should be included in the footer where possible so that people can easily contact the department. The unit name in the footer should match the unit name at the top of the page.
  • There should be three key links in the footer. The “contact us” link should be a page of contacts instead of just a link to an email address.
  • The feedback link should be a website feedback link (to a form) and should contact someone involved with maintaining that website. The contact us/feedback links can be merged.
  • Kevin has emailed a lawyer in the Office of Research for clarification re: the copyright on University of Waterloo web pages.
  • Screen width should be fixed. If people want liquid width, they can do so but the size shouldn’t go smaller than 800x600. This will need to be discussed for future templates.
  • If sites are using the 50th anniversary logo, they should be removed by the end of 2007.
  • There will be a refinement to the University of Waterloo crest early in the new year. People will need to update the crest if they’re storing it locally on their web server.
  • A new, more user-friendly 404 not found page will be made available shortly.
  • The unit title at the top of the page should be black
