Content management survey

Content management sub-group

Meeting

Date: Nov.30, 2007, Time: 1:30-3:00

Follow up

The group agreed to develop a survey for webmasters & maintainers on campus.

  • Pat and Megan will compile a list of 'webpeople' to whom we send the survey
  • Heather will send out the link to the wiki so that we can all submit possible survey questions by Friday Dec 7.
  • Sean will condense/edit the questions and send out by Tuesday Dec 11 - feedback due by end of day Wednesday...first draft of questions ready for Web Advisory on Dec 13
  • Pat will look into software available on campus ("sensus") for survey delivery

The analysis of this survey will help form the basis of any recommendations we make to Web Advisory in February.

Proposed survey questions

  • Name, dept, website(s)...
  • Are you the main web support person in your department? Yes/No. If yes, do you support others with web related xxxx in your department? How many others?

[Would the web support person differ from the person who updates their website - example, in the GSO Cathy Jardine is the web support person but doesn't have anything to do with updates to our website. Should this be rephrased to isolate the hardware support person from the actual website maintainer?]

  • What problems/issues do you experience with maintaining your department's web site? (software issues, no budget for xxxx, lack of training, no time to update web pages...)

[Should we provide some yes/no checkboxes versus open-ended questions to make it faster/easier to foster completion and submission of the survey? e.g., Do any of the following problems/issues impact your ability to keep your web site current....budget for updated software; lack of training; workload conflicts, etc.]

  • What software do you use for web development and maintenance in your department?
  • Are you satisfied with this software? Yes/No. Please specify what you like or dislike about this software.
  • Do you use a content management system (e.g xxxxx) in your department? If yes, please specify and tell us what you like or dislike about your system.

[What Content Management System do you use _________.]

  • Are you familiar with the Waterloo Common Look and Feel (CLF) template? Yes/No. If yes, please tell us what you like or dislike about the CLF?
  • Would you like your name added to our web xxxx mailing list so you can be notified of any campus-related issues or announcements? If so, please specify your email address.
  • Would you say that information on your department's web site is current? Yes/No. If no, what do you think would be required to make it current and keep it current?

[Ask the direct question..."Is your department website information current? Yes/No. If no, please explain why it is not current: ] - they may get a little bit defensive with this approach - Yes, I agree...could be reworded...P.

Proposed survey questions from Audience Research Sub-Group (via Alan Kirker):

a) Have you collected any qualitative data regarding visitors to your (department/office) web pages? This may include direct observations (e.g. one-on-one or focus group), usability studies, audience surveys and/or questionnaires.

b) Are you willing to share this data with members of the web advisory audience subgroup so that future University of Waterloo web upgrades can take this information into account?

Deadline: Friday Dec. 7
