Comments on templates are difficult to use

  • Site too large to create navigation with templates, so we use SSIs
  • Templates are somewhat easy. We ran into a problem when we lost track of a template that we had built based on the Common Look & Feel (CLF). I think this experience may have created some negative views towards the template which I personally believe are good.
  • Love/Hate is an accurate description. I love the need not to design every page from scratch. I hate the Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) of the standard template and the inflexibility of the design. Plus it is a bit boring for my tastes but it looks professional.
  • Templates create problems when trying to accomplish something that the templates designer has not accounted for it (ie. new technologies)
  • Left side navigation bar is difficult to use
  • The 'one size fits all' approach, as well as the amount of information locked down in Dreamweaver tends to make sites tailored to the template rather than designed to their needs.
  • we use a similar CLF, from Waterloo CSS, but don't currently use the templates.
  • Our site used to use the templates but they have been long due for an update and they were not flexible enough to do what we wanted with the site so we re-created them on our own twice to look exactly like the current CLF without using any of the CSS or HTML markup
  • web maintainers would like an free or University of Waterloo-owned software solution. We don't want to buy dreamweaver just to use the template. We paid University of Waterloo graphics 10K to make our main department site - way too much money for an in-house CLF solution!
  • For questions 1-6: I oversee web pages but do not work on creating them, or maintaining the content, except in a backup situation.
  • The content area size doesn't expand when the user has to increase the size of screen fonts and is too small for an administrative web app where the user must enter information.
  • They make it easier to update pages and ensure consistency... they don't necessarily make it easy.
  • There does not seem to be enough instruction on how to implement the templates
  • Very difficult to maintain menus in the templates, and lack of flexibility in the templates require us to have more then 1 template which increases complexity.
  • our website is maintained by the graphics department. we send changes and updates as needed. most of these questions do not apply.
  • I'm not sure that I use templates for my purposes for undergrad department info. I simply usually save a word or wordperfect or excel file as html and then link it.
  • I've only maintained since - nothing new so not really equipped to respond.
  • recommending the inclusion of static elements across pages in an HTML document is just silly.
  • Our menu navigation system is more complex than the templates allow, so we have had to customize them, now we have many different versions of templates.
