Arts update: Incomplete grades as of winter 2020 term

Wednesday, March 25, 2020

This message was originally sent to instructors in the Faculty of Arts by Katherine Acheson, associate dean, undergraduate.

1. INCs from Winter 2019, Spring 2019, and Fall 2019

Some students will be expected to complete the requirements to replace the INC on their record with a numerical grade by the end of this (Winter 2020) term. Some of those students will be unable to meet the conditions of the INC agreement because they will be unable to write a deferred final exam or other assignment that cannot be completed in our present conditions.

For these students:

  1. If the student and the original instructor agree that a CR grade is warranted and appropriate without further work being submitted, then a CR can be submitted by the Associate Dean, Undergraduate Programs.
  2. If the student and the original instructor agree to modified or alternative means of completing the work for the course, they may also agree to the grading basis (numerical or CR/NCR). The grade should be submitted by the end of the Winter 2020 term. If the grade is CR or NCR, the Associate Dean, Undergraduate Programs, will submit it.
  3. If there is no agreement between student and the original instructor on modifications, an extension can be granted until the end of the next term in which it is realistic to believe that the requirements of the original INC can be fulfilled. The student must fill out a revised INC form which the instructor will then submit to the RO.

If this option is taken, the student may be disadvantaged because they do not have a prerequisite for a course they need or want to take. In the event that the INC is extended, please undertake to override the prerequisite so that students can maintain their academic progress.

This option is not suitable for graduating students. For those students, please arrive at a grade through option 1.a or 1.b.
  4. If the course was taught by a faculty member no longer employed at UW, a CR may be granted by the Associate Dean, Undergraduate Programs, based on known course grades. With the cooperation of a current instructor, option 1.b may also be available.

2. INCs for Winter 2020

INCs may be submitted through the normal process for Winter 2020; they should be used sparingly, especially in this unusual term when students have the option of taking a CR for any course for which they have a passing grade.
