SERS welcomes new Director

Derek Armitage

We are pleased to announce that Derek Armitage is the new Director of SERS, taking up the role on January 1, 2024.

Derek has been a faculty member of SERS since 2012 and was most recently the associate director, graduate studies for the school. He has developed and taught core SERS undergraduate courses in sustainability approaches, as well as field courses, and a course on coastal systems. Derek's research studies the sustainable management of oceans, coasts and fisheries with a particular emphasis on the co-management and knowledge co-production, social-ecological systems approach and resilience thinking. He is co-lead of the Vulnerability to Viability Global Partnership for Small-Scale Fisheries, serves on the Scientific Steering Committee of the Integrated Marine Biosphere Research program, and also serves as a member of the Independent Science Panel on the Sustainable Seas Science Challenges (New Zealand).
