The following announcement was circulated to all students, faculty and staff.

I am delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Ian Orchard as the University of Waterloo’s vice-president academic and provost, effective July 1, 2014.

Professor Orchard is a distinguished professor of biology at the University of Toronto Mississauga. He served as a vice-president of the University of Toronto, and principal of the University of Toronto Mississauga for eight years, during which time he led the growth and development of the University of Toronto Mississauga into a semi-autonomous campus of the University of Toronto. He was previously the University of Toronto's first vice-provost, students, and also held positions as vice-dean and associate dean in the Faculty of Arts & Science.

With his rich diversity of experience as a researcher, teacher, and student-focused administrator, Ian brings immense value and talent to our administration. His contributions will be significant and highly valued as we continue our goal of ensuring the University of Waterloo is recognized as one of the world’s top innovation universities.
