In 1988, Union Gas entered into negotiations for the development of a pinnacle reef to be used for storage of natural gas. The pinnacle reef, known as Dow Sarnia Block "A" Pool, is five kilometres south of Sarnia in the Silurian Guelph Formation (Fig. 1). The reef was discovered using seismic surveys in 1980 and was completed as a gas producer. From 1981 to 1986, the reef produced 87.45 million cubic metres (3.087 billion cubic feet) of gas. Production from the reef ceased in July 1986.

Visit the Oil Museum of Canada, Oil Springs, Ontario, the site of the first oil well in North America. Oil Springs is 35 km south of Sarnia. The Oil Museum of Canada is open May 1st to October 31st, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily. Open year round for tours. (519) 834-2840.

Volcanoes in Canada

Catherine Hickson

Volcanoes in Canada? Yes! Canada’s western margin is geologically extremely active. This activity is the result of living on the edge of the huge North American continent, actually a giant tectonic "plate". Off the coast of British Columbia this plate runs into another tectonic plate. The jamming together of these plates creates earthquakes and volcanoes! (Figure 1 on previous page).

Target Earth

Richard A.F. Grieve

As we go about daily living, we are reminded in many ways that we do not exist in isolation. We are part of a much larger symbiotic system of life on earth and it is even popular these days to talk of the earth as if it were a single, closed system. The earth, however, does not exist in isolation.

It is a planet in the solar system and, as such, is subjected to solar system processes. One such process is the impact of interplanetary asteroids and comets.

R.L. Grasty

There is great concern, particularly in the United States regarding the concentration of radon inside homes. In the United States radon is believed to cause a significant number of deaths from lung cancer. However, very few measurements have been made of the radon concentration in outdoor air.
