A middle-aged couple walking along the Verde River in Cottonwood, Arizona, stopped to talk to me as I was sketching. They explained that the tall phragmites grass along the river was used by the native peoples as roofing in their homes and as the stem of arrows.

Josef Sönser's Story

On  December 6, 2007 Josef Sönser was interviewed about his experience in Canada and Ireland where he worked in mines and collected beautiful mineral specimens throughout his career. In December 2007, Mr. Sönser donated his collection to the Royal Ontario Museum and the  Earth Sciences Museum at the University of Waterloo.

The Cave bear was a giant ice-age relative of modern bears

The cave bear (Ursus spelaeus) got it’s name because it spent most of its life living in caves, rather than just using them as hibernation dens, as is the case with modern bears. Cave bears ranged across much of Europe (see map on page 26).

The Faculty of Science seized the ‘spirit of why not’ by acknowledging the remarkable achievements of its own alumni from the past 50 years. The Distinguished Alumni award will be an annual honour bestowed upon a science alumnus who has made significant career contributions to his/her field. Also chosen to honour are 50 outstanding alumni who have themselves proven their merit to their peers and community.
