Prof. Merrin Macrae, University of Waterloo and the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority team up to host an information session and farm tour that summarizes the latest research on phosphorus loss in south-western and mid-western Ontario. Industry players and certified crop advisors will gain insight into what we know about the effectiveness of various conservation practices for local farmers.
Have you got a handle on phosphorus?
There is a lot of talk about the connection between phosphorus and water quality, but what does it mean for farmers in their day-to-day decisions? University of Waterloo Prof. Merrin Macrae and Michael Funk from the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority are teaming up to offer a one-day workshop and farm tour to help certified crop advisors and industry players better understand the latest science on phosphorus loss. We will discuss:
- The state of the science: what we know about phosphorus pathways, from field to tile to stream
- The effectiveness of BMPs: cover crops, tillage, 4Rs and erosion control
- Location and soil type: the importance of geography and soil characteristics in selecting conservation practices
The farm tour will offer a sneak peak into three research plots that demonstrate how researchers:
- Work with producers and various agencies to conduct research studies
- Measure phosphorus loss in the field
- Monitor at the watershed scale
- Determine the impact of P on stream health and the ability of streams to adapt
RSVP required. For further information, consult the event agenda.
