Summary

Summary: Consider this AI-resistant multi-step video assignment from SDS 131R, which gets students working on their project early, rather than leaving everything until the last minute. Students must submit details/“proof” of their work throughout the term, culminating in a video deliverable which must show their face/voice.

Instructional goal: Students think creatively and critically about how political ideologies shape the world by interviewing someone about a political issue and examining that issue from two identified ideologies. The peer review step exposes students to each other's work and has them critically review and help a classmate.

Process: This assignment has several steps and is scaffolded. That means that students will do small tasks that build on each other, getting feedback along the way, before submitting their final video. A high-level overview of the steps involved is presented below.

Step 1: Outline

  1. Students choose an issue to examine and pick two ideologies to focus on.
  2. The instructor quickly evaluates whether their issue meets the criteria.

Step 2: Person and Question

  1. Students find someone to interview and submit their details, as well as at least one key question to ask them.
  2. The instructor provides minimal feedback on their question(s).

Step 3: Video

  • Students create and submit a video and transcript.
  • The instructor grades this submission and provides feedback.

Step 4: Peer Review

  • Students review four classmates’ videos.
  • The instructor grades the feedback they provide to their peers.

Step 5: Closing the Loop Reflection

  1. Students write a short reflection about the feedback.
  2. The instructor grades the reflection.
