Summary

Summary: Adapt this two-part, scaffolded assessment structure from HEALTH 107, which includes independent brainstorming, using AI to explore potential perspectives, evaluating AI output, writing with and without AI, and reflecting on the process including using AI.

Instructional goal: Students develop writing, research, and critical thinking skills. They are asked to evaluate AI outputs by identifying and reviewing scholarly sources, then subsequently writing their own argumentative, evidence-based paper.

Process:

  1. Students complete low-stakes individual assignments that help them develop their writing, research, and critical thinking skills prior to the larger assignment.
  2. When assigning the larger assignment, students form an opinion based on a provocative question impacting key topics in the Faculty of Health and use AI to explore existing ideas and perspectives on the topic.
  3. Students critically evaluate the presented information by AI and conduct their own scholarly search to validate their arguments.
  4. Students ask AI to generate a paper, critique the AI-generated paper, then write their own evidence-based paper.
