Teaching Support and Innovation

Summary: Use or adapt these sample activity instructions to show students how GenAI can support coding activities by helping students brainstorm solutions, debug code, test implementations, and review designs while maintaining accountability for evaluating outputs and informed decision-making.
Sample wording – AI-assisted debugging activity
Students may use approved GenAI tools to help identify and troubleshoot programming errors. However, the primary goal of this activity is to demonstrate your ability to trace program execution, diagnose issues, and explain your reasoning. For each significant bug you encounter, document:
- The error or unexpected behaviour
- How you investigated the issue
- Any GenAI prompts used
- Whether the AI explanation was accurate, partially accurate, or inaccurate
- The solution you implemented and why it resolved the issue
You may be asked to explain your debugging decisions during lab activities or discussions.
Sample wording – Evaluating AI-generated code activity
You will receive some code generated by a GenAI tool. Your task is to critically evaluate the solution and determine whether it is appropriate for the given problem. Your analysis should:
- Assess correctness
- Identify bugs, limitations, or edge cases
- Evaluate efficiency and algorithmic performance
- Assess readability and maintainability
- Recommend and justify improvements
Sample wording – AI-supported software development activity
You may use GenAI to support brainstorming approaches, designing solutions, and implementing code. However, you remain responsible for all design decisions and the correctness of your final product. You must submit an AI development log that includes:
- Significant prompts used
- Outputs received
- Modifications made as a result
- Suggestions you rejected
- Rationale for your decisions
