Dr. Katie Plaisance presented CoLab’s research at the biannual conference of the International Society for the History, Philosophy, and Social Studies of Biology in Porto, Portugal this summer. The talk included survey data from over 500 biologists, examining their interest in and, in some cases, experience collaborating with philosophers of science. Some of these findings are included in Dr. Plaisance and colleagues’ recent paper, “Moving Beyond Anecdotes: An Empirical Investigation of Scientists’ and Engineers’ Views about and Engagement with Philosophy of Science” (open access). This paper includes supplementary material that presents key findings by disciplinary family for those interested in seeing how participants in the biological and life sciences compared to other STEM researchers.
Dr. Plaisance also presented a poster created in collaboration with Dr. Doody entitled, “Advancing the Empirical Turn in Philosophy of Science: The Affordances of Mixed-Methods Approaches.” The poster outlined the overarching methodology of CoLab’s Engaging Science with Philosophy research project and discussed the benefits of mixed-methods study designs for empirical philosophy of science.
