Building our community

The value of community

Feridun HamdullahpurI hope that, like me, you are proud to have the University of Waterloo in your community.

Our institution enjoys a reputation for academic excellence. Named Canada’s Most Innovative University by Maclean’s magazine for the past 23 years, we continue to expand our impact and reach globally.

At the heart of our strategy, we have an ambitious goal: to be recognized as one of the most innovative universities in the world.

To be successful, the University of Waterloo needs to collaborate, learn, share and grow with our local community. I believe this community — its dynamism, entrepreneurial spirit and innovative culture — is the main reason that our University has become a global innovation powerhouse.

The values of the community and the University are intertwined, and this connection allows our students, faculty and staff to contribute in meaningful ways. Whether it is in the form of transformational research leading to the betterment of society or by providing a fulfilling and vibrant student experience making Waterloo a top choice among students, we need a strong relationship with our community to reach our goals.

We’re building that relationship, in part, through the University’s enhanced community relations framework. Developed in partnership with a broad range of local partners, our community relations framework defines our path forward in arts, culture and diversity; economic development; health and well-being; sustainability; and youth engagement.

Our University and our community are inextricably linked, and we are stronger and more successful together. Building Our Community outlines our connections, partnerships and impacts.

I invite you to learn more, and on behalf of our students, faculty, and staff, I thank you for your partnership.
