Facts and figures
- Hosts the Interdisciplinary Centre on Climate Change, which draws participation from 6 faculties, plus 60 internal and external researchers.
- Offers 40+ sustainability-focused or related degrees and diplomas, including Canada’s first Master of Climate Change Program, introduced in 2013.
- Founded Canada’s first Faculty of Environment, in 1969.
- Opened the first LEED® Platinum certified building on an Ontario university campus.
- Recycles more than 30 tonnes of electronic waste annually.
- Participates as a member of Regional Carbon Initiative, Climate Action, and TravelWise.
- Helped start REEP Green Solutions in 1999. REEP has conducted more than 14,000 home-energy audits, helping homeowners reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 21,000 tonnes each year.
- Established a 109-hectare environmental reserve along the North Campus Laurel Creek corridor, which provides habitat for migratory birds and wildlife.
Did you know?
The University of Waterloo now has an Energy Manager and a campus-wide Sustainability Co-ordinator. It has also established the President’s Advisory Council on Sustainability. By reviewing existing programs and policies — and trying new approaches — we will become a more sustainable and innovative institution, leading by example.

Building a sustainable walkway for our campus
The Davis Centre Redevelopment Project, which involved paving an egress created by frequent foot traffic, was established in August 2013 originating from Sustainable Campus Initiative (SCI).
In future years, SCI hopes that students will be able to enjoy a healthy courtyard with the elimination of ice and mud build-up on the walkway.
