55. May I stream an audiovisual work from a streaming website, including Netflix?

The streaming subscriptions that the Media Resources Library has with CBC Curio, Criterion Pictures, Digitalia, the NFB, and Psychotherapy.net are intended for educational use. These terms pertain to in-class courses, distance education courses, and assignments (where an instructor does not show the program in class but assigns it to students to watch on their own time). WUSA has a licence with Criterion Pictures that allows student clubs to show movies at their events, under some circumstances, but otherwise, showing a film from one of these services at a club event or for any entertainment purpose is not permitted and would require permission.

Commercial streaming services like Prime Video, Netflix, Disney+, and Crave require users to agree to terms and conditions that limit the use of these services to personal use. And so, with the exception of some some Netflix-created documentaries listed in the Netflix Media Center, materials from these streaming services cannot be shown in classrooms, or posted in online courses.
