Understanding fair dealing

Fair dealing is an exception in the Copyright Act that allows for the use of copyright-protected works for specific purposes, such as education and research, as long as the use is fair. Knowing how to use fair dealing and judge fairness can be challenging. The following resources can help you understand copyright and the fair dealing exception, including:

• A frequently asked questions (FAQ) page with answers to questions like "What is fair dealing and how does it relate to copyright?" and "Does fair dealing cover teaching?"
• The Fair Dealing Advisory to help you determine what may be copied for instructional purposes without infringing copyright
• The fair dealing flowchart which guides you through the steps to take when making a fair dealing assessment
