Seminar: The Challenges of Medical Device Technology: Design, Usability, Standards and Regulation or Let's try not to kill the patient!

Monday, June 4, 2012 1:30 pm - 1:30 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)
Speaker: Steven Dain MD, FRCPC (Western University)
Location: June 4 2012, 1:30pm, EIT 3142

ABSTRACT

Medical devices need to be designed to survive in the hostile
environment of the operating room, critical care unit, or patient's
home, and potentially to be used by persons ranging from a grade 6
education who doesn't speak English well to a person with expert
knowledge of medical practice.  They need to be physically and
electrically robust, reliable, yet easy to learn and easy to use with
minimal error.  Hardware and software design must be resilient and not
pose a hazard to the patient, the user or the environment in which it
is intended to be used.
In this survey lecture, I will provide an overview of the design
guidelines and requirements necessary to bring a medical device
successfully to the marketplace, by discussing the needs of the
healthcare provider and patients; and showing examples of excellent
and potentially hazardous devices that are currently in use today.
