Electrochemical Ammonia Synthesis and Ammonia Fuel Cells

Electrochemical synthesis and decomposition of ammonia

In addition to currently being the second most manufactured chemical in the world with a global production capacity of ∼230 million tons (Mt) per year, ammonia (NH3) is well known in fertilizer production, as a hydrogen carrier due to its high hydrogen capacity (17.8 wt%) and has recently shown promising potential for clean electricity generation via solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). To meet this growing demand and produce clean and sustainable ammonia, there is an urgent need to develop an alternative to the energy-intensive and CO2-emitting Haber-Bosch process.
