In global food security governance, international organizations are confronted with increasing complexity, fragmentation and overlap. Food security is described as a complex and multi-dimensional issue, with global food security governance being highly fragmented in practice and only little coordination taking place, and as an issue area fraught by the overlap of mandates, operational activities, and rules/ policies.

Foodborne Disease and Food Safety: What’s the Fit with Food Systems?

Each year, over 4 million Canadians develop a new infection because of the food they eat. Although many of these infections resolve without treatment, the associated costs are over $400 million annually, and serious consequences such as paralysis, miscarriage, chronic bowel impacts, and death can occur. In response, public health has evolved a set of activities aimed at identifying, and where possible preemptively intervening, at points across the food system where the microorganisms that cause foodborne disease could be introduced or multiply within food products.

Public health nutrition: where does the environment fit?

At a population-level, Canadians' diet quality is less than optimal to promote health. Historically, public health nutrition professionals have focused on nutrition education campaigns to promote healthy diets. More recently, Canadian governments in many jurisdictions have begun to recognize the importance of the food environment - the settings and contexts in which Canadians purchase and consume foods and beverages - in determining nutritional health.
