Building the financialization of agriculture “brick by brick”: Agricultural economists, expertise and the “golden age” of futures market

The 2007-8 food and financial crises focused renewed attention on the role of futures markets and the financialization of agriculture. According to supporters of futures markets this is only the latest chapter in a long series of battles that Chicago futures markets have been enduring since the 19th century – battles that threatened futures markets with extinction after WWII. This presentation examines the tools, practices and stories of a handful of agricultural economists who built “brick-by-brick” the modern economic foundations of futures markets through the 1950s and 1960s and ushered in “golden age” of futures markets in the 1970s.

Feel free to bring your lunch. I hope you can join us!
