Goretty Dias is an Assistant Professor with of the School of Environment, Enterprise and Development (SEED) at the University of Waterloo. She began her research in the natural sciences by studying emissions of greenhouse gases and other air contaminants from agriculture and natural systems. She is an expert in life cycle assessment (LCA) and carbon footprinting of agricultural systems and has conducted studies of conventional and organic fruits, greenhouse tomatoes, crops, and beef systems. She uses LCA and other sustainability assessment tools to analyze the environmental footprint of food systems, to create sustainable food and bioenergy production systems, and to promote policies and mechanisms that ensure nutritional security and motivate farmers to enhance and protect ecosystem services.
Research interests
- sustainable food and biofuel/bioenergy production, food security, and renewable energy
- going beyond carbon and including Ecological (Environmental) Goods and Services and Social LCA in assessing conventional/organic agriculture/food systems and renewable energies
- environmental footprinting of diets (e.g. North American, European, vegan, etc.) and foodshed analysis
