Matt Gaudreau

Matt is a PhD student at the Balsillie School of International Affairs, University of Waterloo, and completed both his MA in Globalization and International Development and BSocSc in International Economics and Development at the University of Ottawa. He has also attended several other institutions for both research and training, including Nanjing University, Beijing University, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the University of Kentucky.

Interested in the political and environmental dynamics of China’s economic reforms, Matt’s research has centered on these issues. While his MA work examined the politics of environmental NGO and fisher networks in the protection of an urban river in Nanjing, China, his doctoral research focuses on networks of actors from China (corporations, banks etc.) in global food systems. These issues are not of interest solely to China, but have wide implications for the way we view interactions between state and non-state actors under globalization.

Matt has held research positions at the Institute for Science, Society and Policy (University of Ottawa), HRSDC Canada-EU Sustainable Cities Project, and Laurier Research Group, along with Research Assistant positions at the University of Ottawa in both the Department of Geography and School of International Development and Global Studies.
