Modern health care often focuses on patients at key moments—during visits, procedures, and discharge—but the gaps in between can lead to worsening conditions, emergencies, and preventable readmissions. Doro, a startup emerging from the University of Waterloo’s Velocity program, is developing clinically guided AI tools to extend care beyond appointments and support patients continuously.

Co-founded by Rastin Rassoli, Doro builds purpose-designed AI systems that integrate into health and mental health care. The platform uses patient-reported data to monitor symptoms, mood, and daily functioning, helping both patients and clinicians maintain a clearer picture of well-being. It also provides evidence-based guidance to help manage stress and anxiety, aiming to prevent escalation between visits and after discharge.

Developed in collaboration with researchers and clinicians, Doro emphasizes safety, privacy, and clinical validation. The technology is being explored in high-risk areas such as addiction, behavioural rehabilitation, Parkinson’s care, and suicide prevention, where consistent support is critical. Early deployments across campus wellness services and clinics in Ontario and Alberta are helping evaluate whether ongoing AI-supported engagement can improve recovery and reduce hospital readmissions.

While still in early stages, Doro reflects a growing effort to close the “last mile” in health care—ensuring patients remain supported during the periods that matter most for long-term outcomes.
