The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition is an annual university-wide competition for research-based Master's and Doctoral students at the University of Waterloo. Competitors have one static slide and three minutes to explain the breadth and significance of their research to a non-specialist audience. Winners of the First Place and Runner Up Awards will be selected by a panel of judges at the university-wide 3MT final competition. The first Place winner will receive an award of $1,000 and the Runner Up will receive an award of $500.
One award of $1,000 and another of $500.
Participation in the 3MT is required to be eligible to receive one of the awards. Selection is made by a judging panel at the institutional 3MT finals each year.

The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is co-ordinated within the Office of Indigenous Relations.
