The Grebel Fund: Balancing Budget Pressures and Student Support

Grebel has committed to providing $225,000 in financial aid to students, despite a drop in revenues due to provincial cuts. “Our ability to provide financial assistance to graduate and residence students who need it helps to keep our programs full,” observed President, Marcus Shantz. “This results in higher program revenues.”

Donations to the Grebel Fund provide tuition scholarships to students in the Master of Theological Studies and Peace and Conflict Studies programs. Student Services uses budget funds to match support that students receive from their home congregations. The College also uses donations to offer an extra $1,000 to Mennonite Students from outside Ontario.

Director of Finance, Sara Cressman has reported that “the 10% tuition cut for students reduced Grebel’s budgeted revenue by $227,000 this fiscal year.”

“Donors can make a real difference in our ability to deliver our programs and support our students,” noted Director of Advancement Fred W. Martin. This year the goal for the annual Grebel Fund is $345,000. Most of the donations are forwarded directly to students in the form of financial aid, and some are used to provide revenue for programs like noon hour concerts or the Archives and Library, that don’t have direct sources of revenue.
