Hart Lab Manual

Welcome to the Hart Lab

Welcome from Sara Hart, Principal Investigator

The Hart Lab Manual brings together the expectations, values, and research practices that guide our work as a collaborative research community. It is designed to help all members understand how we conduct studies, support one another, and uphold the standards that define the Hart Lab. Reviewing the manual ensures that everyone is aligned with our mission to produce thoughtful, ethical, and high‑quality psychological research.

Purpose of the Manual

The manual provides a shared foundation for how the lab operates. It helps members:

  • Understand the lab’s research mission and guiding principles
  • Navigate daily workflows, communication norms, and project expectations
  • Follow ethical and professional standards in research and collaboration
  • Access clear guidance on responsibilities, procedures, and conduct
  • Integrate smoothly into the lab’s culture and research environment

About the Hart Lab

The Hart Lab is a developmental psychology research group led by Dr. Sara Hart. The lab studies how children learn and develop, with a particular focus on reading and mathematics.

Research in the lab integrates perspectives from developmental psychology, cognitive psychology, education, and behavioral genetics to better understand why individuals differ in their learning experiences and outcomes.

Our Philosophy

We believe that high-impact research is driven by curiosity, integrity, and mutual respect. Our lab thrives when every member feels empowered to share their ideas, challenge assumptions, and support one another’s growth. We prioritize:

  • Rigorous Inquiry: We ask difficult questions and pursue excellence in our methodology.
  • Open Collaboration: We share knowledge freely and believe that our best work happens together.
  • Inclusive innovation: We strive to create technology and research that considers the diverse needs of all people.

Research focus

The Hart Lab examines how genetic, environmental, and emotional factors interact to shape learning across development. Key areas of research include:

  • Reading development and learning disabilities
  • Mathematics learning and maths anxiety
  • Genetic and environmental influences on learning
  • Precision education and individualized learning approaches
  • Home and school learning environments

The lab emphasizes rigorous research methods, transparency, and collaboration.

Lab Values and Culture

The Hart Lab is committed to fostering a respectful, inclusive, and supportive research environment. We value professionalism, open communication, and collaboration.

The lab culture is guided by:

  • Respect for diverse backgrounds and perspectives
  • Integrity and responsibility in research
  • Constructive feedback and shared learning
  • Mentorship and professional development

Expectations for Lab Members

Lab members are expected to engage in research activities ethically and professionally. General expectations include respectful communication, active participation in lab activities, and a commitment to learning and collaboration.

Specific responsibilities vary depending on role and project.

Research Ethics and Safety

All research conducted in the Hart Lab follows University of Waterloo policies and applicable ethical and regulatory guidelines. Research integrity and responsible data practices are central to all lab activities.

Safety is a priority in the Hart Lab. Lab members are required to complete relevant training and follow university and departmental safety requirements. Detailed safety procedures are provided internally.

Training and Mentorship

Training and mentorship are central to the Hart Lab experience. The lab supports skill development, critical thinking, and professional growth at all stages of training.

Opportunities may include mentorship, participation in lab meetings, research presentations, and engagement with the broader research community.

Joining the Hart Lab

The Hart Lab welcomes interest from undergraduate students, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and collaborators who are motivated to contribute to research on learning and development.
