This World Circular Economy Forum (WCEF) 2021 Side Event will be a solutions-oriented, interactive, virtual workshop focused on the ‘Innovation Pathways’ to achieving a more circular plastics economy in Canada – based on the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s (EMF) handbook: “Upstream Innovation: a guide to packaging solutions”.

Leaders from business, government and civil society set out the bold action needed to create a circular economy.

The International Conference on EcoBalance, organized by the Institute of Life Cycle Assessment, Japan (ILCAJ), has been held in Japan since 1994 as a biennial conference. Setting life cycle thinking as its core concept, EcoBalance is recognized as one of the world's premier conferences for academic, industry, and government professionals. EcoBalance serves as a forum for discussions on environmental performance evaluation, information disclosure regarding evaluation results, and for the development and implementation of discussed methods.

In the last year, many pharmaceutical companies have made bold sustainability commitments, including net zero targets. This presentation gives on overview of the drivers behind the sector’s interest in LCA and carbon footprinting. It provides examples of where the environmental hotspots are typically found in pharmaceutical and healthcare products, highlights the challenges LCA practitioners face when conducting assessments in this industry, and presents a case study from one of ERM’s pharmaceutical clients.

Canada’s energy landscape is changing. From the growth of clean and renewable energy to the dawn of the digital era, significant shifts mean the infrastructure of yesterday will no longer suffice for the future.
