Obsolescence can be defined as the process of becoming obsolete by being no longer useful or needed. A product’s obsolescence can happen for various reasons, e.g., the product is no longer functional, quality has degraded, is out of fashion, and/or it’s performance is compromised in comparison to modern technological developments. Above all these reasons is a much provocative business approach of designing and manufacturing products with built-in features leading the product to break down after a certain time, known as planned obsolescence. Considering the products’ manufacturing side, extending a product’s lifetime should be considered by paying careful attention to not get locked into a technological set-up that resists any adaptation to ongoing technological advancements. Designing products that are adaptable to future needs and innovations is key towards slowing down the products’ obsolescence. On the consumption side, consumers need to show responsible behavior by prioritizing needs over wishes.
