Research

“My overarching research goal is to develop practical and effective solutions that identify those with deleterious changes in body composition (loss of muscle, gains in adipose tissue) and design strategies that manage or improve skeletal muscle health.”

Dr. Marina Mourtzakis

Topics of Interest

Cancer Our current work is focused in understanding the changes in body composition that occur in breast and prostate cancer patients. We are also investigating nutrition and exercise interventions.
Metabolic Conditions (i.e. Diabetes, Liver, and Kidney Disease) Our current work is focused on understanding body composition phenotypes in relation to metabolic profiles in people diagnosed with diabetes, liver, and kidney diseases.
Ultrasound Our current work is focused on characterizing muscle and adipose tissue characteristics at various anatomical sites, and the metabolic implications of these characteristics.
Body Composition Methods Our current work is focused on developing new approaches to understanding body composition profiles, including muscle atrophy and overweight/obesity, and their effects on health.
Muscle Atrophy Our current work examines how loss of muscle affects health outcomes.

Populations of Interest

Young and older healthy populations.

Populations demonstrating loss of muscle mass, including; cancer, critically ill, liver cirrhosis, kidney disease, diabetes.
