“Based on a True Story” also known as the Cardboard Chair Project is a large-scale project that is broken into two parts. In the first part of the project, students learn narrative non-fiction storytelling strategies and tactics, ultimately writing a story about their lives related to the act of sitting or chairs.

The second part of the project involves applying those learnings to construct a life-size cardboard chair, using their personal story as inspiration. This process gives them experience navigating the wide gulf between the creation of a screen rendering and constructing a physical model with their own hands.

The act of creating their chairs to display for their community gives them additional motivation to put forth their best work and in the process bond with each other over this shared experience.

The Based on a True Story exhibit is now on display in the Dana Porter Library lobby.
