Hello Waterloo! My name is Natalie Robinson and I am in my last term of the Knowledge Integration program. This is also my third semester as a Library Ambassador, and I am happy to be back. There are a lot of exciting things happening at the library this term. There are some fun events that are being planned, and I, for one, am super excited to see what changes the construction will bring. There’s no better place to come to study or just hang out in-between classes than the library. My favourite spot to sit is in a comfy chair near Browsers on Dana Porter’s main floor.
The start of term is always busy, which also means lots of questions. As a Library Ambassador, part of my job is to help run events at the start of term to answer questions that students have regarding our library services. I’ve already had the chance to talk to students and staff on campus and I look forward to our next events. You guys have had some great questions. I enjoy being able to talk to students and tell them all about the great features the library has to offer.
As a Library Ambassador I not only help out with library run events, I also get to run a project of my own. In the past I have run projects that have engaged students in person, but this term I’m focusing on our social media. Similar to last term, my project’s purpose is to help promote the Waterloo Reads books located in Dana Porter and Davis Centre. The Waterloo Reads collection contains over 400 fiction and popular books. They are a great way to take some time to relax and focus on something other than studying. For my project this term I have created emoji riddles for some of the titles from the collection. Make a guess about the book title and be entered into a draw to win a prize. Keep an eye on our Facebook, Twitter or Instagram for when the contest starts.
Another part of my job as a Library Ambassador is to help mentor the newest additions to our team. I applied to be a Library Ambassador not only because I love the library, but also because I wanted to get more involved on campus and learn new skills. While working as a Library Ambassador I have had the opportunity to practice both written and verbal communication skills. I was even able to make a presentation in front of all of the library staff, which was scary but amazing. I look forward to helping the new staff to develop their skills, just like the other Library Ambassadors helped me. This job comes with a lot of freedom, but sometimes having fewer constraints can be a challenge, so being able to rely on your coworkers for advice is important. Everyone at the library is so nice, and I’m so glad to be a part of this community.
Being a Library Ambassador has taught me the value of seizing opportunities when they appear and to always reach forward. I can’t wait for another great semester, and I hope all of you are just as excited.
