The Cybersecurity and Privacy Institute was formed to uncover new approaches to security and privacy and educating Canada’s future leaders to be able to understand and respond to emerging online threats.
Today Canadians nearing retirement expect to work longer, and many that have just retired had that same expectation. Within that group, the majority believe they’ll also have low liquid retirement assets.
Mathematicians and computer scientists are natural problem solvers. It is this innate curiousity and tenacity that provides fertile ground for ideation, creation. For the entrepreneurial-minded, the logical outcome is commercialization.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing our lives – transforming how we work, how we travel, how we treat disease, how we communicate, and how we learn.
From a young age, Dr. Karen Kopciuk (MMath ’95, GCERT ‘01, PhD ’01) had a passion for learning and for medicine. Starting her career as a dental hygienist, she soon came to realize her interest in research extended deeper than she ever imagined. Making the decision to return to school as a mature student, Karen completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Calgary before coming to the University of Waterloo for her Master’s and PhD degrees in statistics.
This Spring, we celebrated not only the hard work and success of our newest alumni at Convocation, but the legacy of James Wesley (Wes) Graham and his part of the faculty’s history.
