Alumni on the move and getting noticed…

’12 PhD: Christopher Ferrie is travelling and promoting his book Quantum Physics for Babies when he’s not teaching at the University of Technology Sydney and raising his busy family.

’01 BMath: Congratulations to Lylan Masterman. He was promoted to General Partner with White Star Capital.

’13 MMath: Maclean's featured David Qian’s research with Richardo Fukasawa, Jochen Koeneman, and Andre Linhares in collaboration with medical staff at Toronto’s SickKids hospital.

’15 BMath: Hats off to Andrew Koo. The Texas Rangers hired Koo as Analyst, Baseball Operations.

’65 PhD: Congratulations to Don Cowan and fellow faculty member Richard Holt. They will receive the CS-Can/Info-Can Lifetime Achievement Award at the AGM in Toronto on May 7th.

’80 BMath, ’85 BMath &’87 BMath: Thanks to Danny Ying, Ophelia Lazaridis, and David McKay for representing math at the University of Waterloo’s 60th Alumni Achievement Awards. These three alumni were recognized by the university for their commitment to the University of Waterloo.

’86 BMath, '84 PhD, ’87 MMath & ’12 BMath: We were honoured to have our three Alumni Achievement winners Brian Arbogast, Niky Kamran, and Dora Vell), as well as Young Alumni Award Winner, Patrick Hayes attend our 31st Annual Awards Banquet with our many student award recipients.

’99 BMath & ’03 MMath: Golden hardware goes to Jeff Lait and Cristin Barghiel! The two took Sci-Tech Oscars home for their work connected to Houdini visual effects and animation system by SideFX Software.

’07 BMath: Another math alumnus, Mike Jutan, was also honoured at the Oscars of the scientific and technical worlds for his part in developing rigging software for George Lucas’ visual effects company Industrial Light & Magic. 

Of note

  • Pascal Poupart named a senior researcher of RBC’s Borealis AI. Poupart has already collaborated with Huawei, Google, Intel, and Ford.
  • Congratulations to Mark Giesbrecht for his reappointment as the Director of the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science.
  • Srinivasan Keshav is moving up at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. He was elevated to the grade of Senior Member
  • Raouf Boutaba, along with postdoctoral fellows, graduate students and international colleagues, won the best paper award at CNSM 2017
