Biographical sketch: Barbara Bowman Shuh (1857-1937) was born to Moses and Anna Bowman near Mannheim, Ontario. In 1878, she married David Shuh; they farmed on the Shuh farm near Berlin (Kitchener). In 1908, she became president of the first sewing circle of Berlin Mennonite Church; she held this post until 1917. Barbara Shuh was known in the community as a traditional healer. David and Barbara had seven children; David died in 1920 after they moved from the farm to Kitchener.

Custodial history: The diaries were loaned by Reta Shuh Mader, granddaughter of Barbara Bowman Shuh, to Lorna Bergey. After Reta's death in 2003, the diaries were donated to the Archives.

Scope and content: Contains diaries kept by Barbara Shuh documenting daily domestic, farm and community activities.
