Biographical sketch: Eldon Daniel Weber (18 April 1913-26 February 2004) was born to Ephraim Histand Weber and Maria Steckle. On September 11, 1943  he married Laura Mary Mather (October 1, 1920-December 25, 1985), daughter of John Ackland Mather and Mary Ellen Adulsa Philip;  they had two children, Ross (October 5, 1946-      ) and Bryce (Dec. 2, 1950-     ). After Laura's death, he married Helen Louise Luft.

Weber graduated from Stratford Normal School in 1932, and served for several years as a public school teacher. He became ill with tuberculosis and was hospitalized for 18 months in the 1930s. Beginning in 1939 he worked for the Fuller Brush Company, and for eighteen years he was District Field Manager. In 1957 he began more than 30 years as a Chartered Life Underwriter for Mutual Life of Canada.

He joined the Ontario Genealogical Society in 1970; he served as President 1975-1977. He helped organize the Waterloo-Wellington Branch of the Society in 1972 and founded their publication, Branch notes. He also served as editor of Canadian German folklore for the Pennsylvania German Folklore Society of Ontario for twelve years, and was the only Canadian on the Board of Directors of the Federation of Genealogical Societies from 1976-1988.

Weber began his own serious genealogical research for his first book, The descendants of Henry B. Steckle and Lydia Shantz (1968). His other major publications included Descendants of Pioneer Henry Weber (Weaver) and Salome Bauman (1971); a reprint of Ezra Eby's Biographical history of early settlers and their descendants in Waterloo Township (1971, with subsequent reprints in 1978 and 1984); and From Stambach to Berlin (Ontario): the descendants of the Rev. John W. Stoeckle/Steckle, 1802-1879. He also informally published a number of indices, cemetery lists, etc.

Custodial history: Donated to the Mennonite Archives of Ontario by Eldon Weber in 1998. A number of books were also donated by Weber. They are included in the University of Waterloo Library catalogue and can be found by searching on Weber's name.
