Biographical sketch: Samuel B. Bowman (Bauman, Baumann), known as "Miller Sam," was born in Berks County, Pennsylvania in 1802, one of thirteen children of Joseph (1766-1849, an ordained Mennonite minister) and Mary Bauman. The family moved to Blair, Waterloo County in 1816. Samuel married Elizabeth Bauman (1811-1865). Samuel and Elizabeth had seven children, farmed on his parents' homestead and also ran a mill. 

Custodial history: These letters were photocopied from originals found in the Muddy Creek Farm Library, Ephrata, Pennsylvania. Sam Steiner donated the copies to the Archives in 2012.

Scope and content: Contains copies of letters, written largely among relatives, in German. A file list can be found, below. Letters with an asterisk (*) were translated in 2014-2015 by Erica Janzen.
