Biographical sketch: Ernest J. Swalm (Jan. 25, 1897-Aug. 12, 1991) was the son of Isaac and Mary Alice Swalm. He married Maggie Steckley; they had four children. Swalm farmed near Duntroon, Ont. He was best known for his long service in the Brethren in Christ Church as a minister and Bishop, beginning in 1920. He served on many inter-Mennonite committees, including the Conference of Historical Peace Churches, Mennonite World Conference, etc. In 1977 the University of Waterloo awarded him an honorary doctoral degree.
Scope and content: The fonds consists of miscellaneous notes, clippings and correspondence on peace issues, 1940-1970. Other relevant records can be found in the Conference of Historic Peace Churches fonds.
Custodial history: Donated to the Mennonite Archives of Ontario by E.J. Swalm.A 1945 address to the Mennonite Mission Board of Ontario, entitled "The missionary aspect of the C.O. witness," was transferred from the Mission Board fonds in 2013. Two pieces of correspondence were donated by Beth Mark in 2016.
