Biographical Sketch: John C. Shantz (23 Oct 1807-17 Apr 1875) was the son of Christian R. Shantz (13 Feb 1779-9 Nov 1856) and Magdalena S. Cressman (30 Jan 1783-13 Aug 1866). Shantz was a farmer and sawmill operator. He married Anna R. Detweiler (8 March 1816-17 February 1856) on 12 January 1833. They had twelve children
John C. Shantz was ordained as a deacon for the Shantz Mennonite Church in 1850; the exact date is unknown. He was buried at the Shantz Mennonite cemetery.
Custodial history: Donated to the Mennonite Historical Society of Ontario via Lorna L. Bergey.
Scope and content: The collection consists of a financial daybook containing business transactions from 1848 until his death. It also includes information on the settlement of John Shantz's estate.
