After boarding a plane in Spain and spending over a week on a layover in Paris, France, the much-anticipated REEM-C recently arrived on campus.

Now unpacked, the humanoid robot has started an extensive training program without once breaking a sweat.

At 165 centimetres tall, 80 kilograms in weight and sporting the University’s black and gold colours, REEM-C is described as the slightly smaller and lighter brother of TALOS, the full-size black and purple robot that was greeted with great fanfare at Engineering 7 almost two years ago.

The University of Waterloo’s Faculty of Mathematics has introduced a new course designed to help secondary school students whose education was interrupted abruptly by COVID-19 sharpen their mathematical skills ahead of commencing their post-secondary education.

The new online, skills-based course, MTHEL 199, gives Waterloo’s incoming students extra practice in six branches of mathematics: inequalities and absolute values, radicals and rational expressions, trigonometry, exponential and logarithmic functions, polynomials and introductory calculus.

When the COVID-19 pandemic first hit, I was concerned about my job security.

The start of the Spring Term, at the height of COVID, had instructors moving their courses to a remote format with students spread across time zones. It changed delivery, assignments and testing as in the case of Anton Mosunov, an award-winning lecturer in the Faculty of Mathematics who altered the MATH 135 midterm to an oral exam.

When Devon Asemota was a second-year Kinesiology student, he took the Introduction to Exercise Physiology lab and experienced through hands-on learning how to assess an individual’s cardiovascular fitness.

Now in his fourth year, Asemota is preparing that same lab for incoming second-year students who will experience it virtually.
